Life Lessons and Preschool
Today was a very happy and sad day.
Today was my last day of working at the preschool.
I never thought of myself as a preschool teacher, but this past year I have been one. And though I have officially discovered that I do enjoy working with older "kids" (teen and college age) more, I learned a whole lot and really did enjoy myself during my time at the preschool. So much so that I do hope to come back to be a "guest reader" or something every once in a while :)
But, I don't know if you know this, but preschoolers are so cool. Crazy. And kinda gross sometimes. But cool. They hardly have any inhibitions. And the ones they do you are usually caused by the way they have been treated by other kids and people, similar to us.
But they are so easy to talk to, to goof around with, and love.
When these kids love you, you know it without a doubt.
"Miss Katelyn, can I tell you a secret?"
"Miss Katelyn, I have to tell you something....I love you."
"Miss Katelyn, you HAVE to babysit me!"
The hugs, the secrets, the sweet things they said, all made the job worth it.
It's crazy to me how much they learned so fast! When I first started the job I didn't really realize that I was going to be teaching them how to use scissors! Sure, I figured ABC's, 123's, how to write their name, but not little things like how to hold and use scissors. These kids are truly just learning the things most of us find so basic, and while sometimes it was frustrating trying to get them to understand how to do certain things, I had the privilege and honor of helping them learn something they will legitimately use the rest of their lives. Amazing.
Not only did I get to teach these preschooler's, but they really taught me too.
They taught me patience, love, understanding, creativity, goofiness, how to be firm without being mean, the importance of standing up for ourselves, the list could go on.
Now that my time at the preschool is over, there is a new chapter ahead, but I do not move forward without fondly looking back on this year of teaching. And one of the best parts about teaching preschool is that it is part of the church I go to, so I will get to continue to see some of these kids at church on Sundays. When they run up to me to hug me at church or give me a goofy look from across the room, those moments are oh so special, and I am so excited to still have those moments of "preschool" in my life.
This next chapter for me is a full-time job at Rochester College. I think I have the longest job title of anyone on campus...haha. I am the "Administrative Assistant for the Masters of Religious Education program and undergraduate Enrollment Services." Whew. But I am so blessed and so thankful to have a full-time job, employed by a school I love and support. This year has been one story after another of God's continued faithfulness and care for us, and I am so thankful and grateful.
So here is to the next the chapter! I'm excited to see what lies ahead.
