The Last 30 Days
A few days late, but better late than never! ......................................................................................
The last 30 days have been a roller coaster of food emotions.
That sounds like a silly thing to say, but I think it perfectly describes what we went through.
For the past 30 days Clay and I chose to do the whole30 challenge. If you don't know what whole30 is, it's basically a system cleanse and reboot where you cut out all grains, legumes, sugars, dairy, etc.. and just focus on whole foods like veggies, fruit, and meat. You can find more info on the whole30 website, but the idea is to restart your system so that when you add things back in [slowly] you can see what bothers your system, makes your skin breakout, joints hurt, etc...
So, today marks our freedom day. We have officially completed our whole30 and I can honestly say it's been a difficult, but oh so worth it, experience!
The first day was a piece of cake, other than my whole emotional break down caused by my lack of food prep skills. The first weekend was a disaster because I wasn't feeding my body enough to keep up with my metabolism, so I felt super sick. But once I adjusted how much I was consuming things started to fall into place. However, the first two and a half weeks as a whole were so awful. At least mentally. Our bodies wanted nothing more than for us to give in and eat all the pizza, pop, ice cream, cookies, brownies, chocolate, breadsticks.....you get the idea. All the food we were consuming before we started this. It made us sluggish and irritable, and it honestly made me kind of mad. I love food. Clay loves food. We are food people. When we get together with friends we generally are eating food. So when we had to refocus how we did that it was frustrating. I'm pretty sure the majority of our text conversations were telling each other what foods we were craving that day, minute, second...
But then, after the first couple weeks we started to see the light at the end of the {very long} tunnel.
Suddenly we had more energy, we weren't craving anything super sugary or greasy, we were having fun cooking meals together. I honestly was skeptical that we would ever reach this point. I was such a cynic even going into this, thinking "yeah we can accomplish the 30 days, but whats the difference really going to be?"
Well let me tell you...
* We cook meals together all the time now
* I don't absolutely hate cooking anymore
* We eat multiple kinds of veggies every day {gasp!}
* We have more energy
* Clay's chest doesn't hurt
* My face has cleared up
* Clay lost around 10lbs
* My stomach hasn't bothered me at all
* Clay can {and will} actually eat breakfast now
* We are more aware of what we are putting into our bodies
* We actually want to continue making healthier choices
* We have formed healthy habits like actually packing lunches and making dinner every day
All these things don't negate the fact that we still really want that cheesy pizza or ice cream occasionally, but we have learned self control in the way we will be consuming those things.
I still love food. I am just choosing to be smarter about the way I consume it. I will still occasionally indulge in the gooey cinnamon roll, greasy pizza, or chocolate chip cookie {because, come one, it's a chocolate chip cookie} but these will be conscious decisions I make instead of expectations every day.
The next couple weeks will be us figuring out what food bother us and what ones we can officially add back to our diets. My Mom and sisters have quite a few sensitivities and allergies, so here's to hoping my list isn't too long!
Also, I want to just say how proud I am of my husband! He definitely was a rock for me during these 30 days. He has been encouraging and helpful, and I'm pretty sure he had it together better than I did here toward the end. To see how much more energy he has and his new excitement for being healthier has totally made these 30 days worth it.
I didn't think I would ever say that. But here I am, "whole30 strong" as they say.
Here's to hoping we can continue our healthy lifestyle! Thank you to everyone who encouraged us along the way ❤️
